Let’s be honest. Looking down on someone is sometimes the easiest thing to do, even if that someone is us. This piece proposes an angle in which the life affirming push into movement comes from above in a form of a stick percussion duo piece performed in real time.

IV. The Ladder (a live improvisation)

Bodies of Sound - IV. The Ladder (a live improvisation)
Play Video

Welcome to the London Docks. Between 1815 and 1969, this is where countless imperial vessels brought in high-value commodities such as ivory, spices, coffee and cocoa. We’ll be staying here for the next couple of weeks in search of human stories that can still be felt through its walls, basins and water.

What sits in the background is the canal that the incoming ships used as they transported goods and people from and to the London Docks.

What stands in the foreground is the altered sense of reality, space and motion. If a divide turned sideways is a tool of agency, then what does that tell us about the potential for a re-writing of our history?

This piece concludes our Berlin trilogy and the intrigue of the lines of division that can so clearly define our existence. In this case, we also move to a less human and more machine-like landscape.

But let this first and foremost be an open question to you. What do you see, hear and feel in this piece?

II. Why You Stand (a live improvisation)

Bodies of Sound - II. Why You Stand (a live improvisation)
Play Video

Body to body, person to person. Why You Stand is an unplanned examination of how tense and unforgiving our interpersonal relationships can be.

Originally we didn't plan to shoot in front of the graffitied wall. We wanted to stick to the recently painted, clean section of it. However, this improvisation came in the way and plunged us into a fast paced and intimate portrayal of love, fear and anger.

The Berlin Wall fell exactly 31 years ago. Let this be your chant as you gently feel into the surface of what is already there and evaluate what stays and what goes. Now is when the real work, the good work starts. Enjoy it.
